It shouldn't surprise you that Denver has been picked to win the Summit League again. But Omaha continues to be a thorn in the Pioneers' side. In 2016, the two squads tied for for the regular-season title and met in the conference tournament final with Denver prevailing 2-1. A year later, Denver coasted to the #1 seed in the conference tournament but was eliminated via penalty kicks in the title match...by Omaha. The Mavs earned a couple of first-place votes in the Summit's pre-season poll of head coaches.

Denver has won or shared in the Summit regular-season championship five straight years, and returns Brazilian senior forward Andre Shinyashiki (nine goals) and Scott DeVoss (Summit Defensive Player of the Year). The Pioneers are not ducking anyone in non-conference play, hosting Washington, San Francisco, Tulsa and Saint Louis and visiting SMU, Creighton, Virginia, Maryland and Stanford.

Omaha is led by Junior defender Seth Rinderknecht, the anchor of the Mav defense last season and a two-time first-team All-Summit honoree. We should know pretty quickly who has the inside track for the #1 seed for the conference tournament: Omaha hosts Denver in the conference opener on Sept. 22.

One final note: Another name change is in order now that Indiana University – Purdue University Fort Wayne has split into two schools. The athletics program remains with the Purdue campus, so the Mastadons will now be known as Purdue Fort Wayne.
