The Sun Belt Conference lost another member when Division III Hartwick, the 1977 NCAA Tournament champions, decided to end its grandfathered status in Division I. Thus ends the fiction that Oneonta, NY was somehow located in the Sun Belt.
The addition of Coastal Carolina in 2016 really lifted the conference's RPI ranking, as the Chanticleers are always competitive on a national basis. Defender Kervin Fadel of Costa Rica helped lead a stingy Coastal Carolina to the 3rd round of the NCAA Tournament in 2017. Senior forward Yazeed Matthews and senior midfielder Saif Alhameli were also voted onto the pre-season all-conference squad.
Georgia State is led by senior midfielder Hannes Burmeister of Germany, coming off an 8-goal campaign. Georgia Southern brings back 2017 first-team forward Javier Carbonell of Spain, and 2nd-team defender Aldair Cortes of Cairo...Georgia, not Egypt.
