Atlantic Coast Conference Update

Wake Forest (2-0-0)
The Demon Deacons are the #1 team in the latest United Soccer Coaches poll after victories over ETSU and 2017 College Cup finalist Indiana. With the Demon Deacons and Hoosiers less than four minutes away from finishing in a draw in front of 4,751 fans, Justin McMaster sent Bruno Lapa down the right sideline. Lapa delivered a cross into the box, where freshman Kyle Holcomb hit a one-timer off the inside of the far post and into the back of the net for the winner.

Duke (2-0-0)
The Blue Devils moved up to #2 in the USC poll after sweeping the John Rennie Invitational with victories over then-#20 FIU and Vermont. One point of concern: the defense has given up three goals in the first two contests.

Virginia (1-0-0)
On August 18, sophomore Joe Bell was in Papua New Guinea helping the New Zealand Junior All Whites win the 2018 Oceania Football Confederation U-19 Championship. On August 24, Bell scored with 19 seconds remaining to lift the Cavaliers past a pesky New Hampshire team.

Louisville (2-0-0)
The #9 Cardinals have been dominant in one-goal victories over St. Bonnie and Georgia State -- Louisville has outshot its opposition 30-7 (13-5 on goal) and won the corner-kick battle 18-6. Louisville has one more home game vs. Saint Louis before it heads down to Lexington for a match with Kentucky.

North Carolina (1-1-0)
The Tar Heels dropped from #3 to #12 in the USC poll after a 1-0 loss to Indiana in a rematch of a 2017 College Cup semifinal match. The Hoosiers used a free kick set piece to score in the 88th minute to escape, despite the Tar Heels holding an 11-3 edge in shots.

Notre Dame (0-0-1)
The Irish were 16 seconds away from victory when a free kick from 40 yards resulted in a game-tying goal for Saint Louis. "We would like to have handled their tying goal better," said Notre Dame head coach Chad Riley. "After we got our goal they opened up a little bit more and I thought we made some really good chances that we didn't capitalize on. I think we are most disappointed that we weren't able to get that second goal.

Virginia Tech (2-0-0)
The Hokies begin the season with six games away from home, and they're off to a great start with a pair of neutral-site victories in James Madison's tournament. Marc Hoppler scored two goals over the weekend, while James Kasak assisted on three of Virginia Tech's four goals.

NC State (2-0-0)
The Wolfpack recorded a probable RPI bonus-point victory with a 2-0 win at then-#2 Akron. The win marked the third win against a top-five opponent in the last six games dating back to last season.

Clemson (1-1-0)
The Tigers dropped out of the USC poll after a near-disastrous weekend in Nebraska was averted with a narrow 1-0 win over Omaha. "I’m happy to come away from the trip with three points after Friday night’s loss," said head coach Mike Noonan. “I thought the team battled well. But moving forward, we’re going to need to play a lot better, and a lot more clinically in the final third. We’ve got a lot of work to do."

Pittsburgh (1-1-0)
The Panthers had an uneven start, losing at home 1-0 to Colgate before traveling to Delaware and routing the Blue Hens 6-1. The road doesn't get any easier for Pitt, which now has consecutive road games at Akron, North Carolina and VCU.
